Never accept a counter offer.
Let me say that again. Never. Accept. A. Counter. Offer.
Whatever reasons led you to start looking in the first place are not going to change. If they thought you were worth that much, they would have already given it to you. A counter offer is a way to keep you around so that they can replace you on their timetable and terms rather than yours. It’s a way to find a replacement before you leave instead of having a gap. It’s a clear signal that your position is valuable, but you are not.
Once you give notice, don’t look back.
